At the Trumbull County Educational Service Center (TCESC), we're excited to offer a pre-apprenticeship program in carpentry that's recognized by the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council (OSAC). With the help of grant funding, we're able to provide this innovative program that falls under the Apprenticeship and Journeyman career fields on the Innovative Workforce Incentive Program list sponsored by the Ohio Department of Education.
About Us
"All of the good things we build, end up building us."
The goal of this two-year program is to impart the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes that will prepare students to become competent entry-level carpenters and to encourage students to implement their career choice by seeking out further training.
Who We Are
Our Approach
Our trained and certified outreach specialists provide one-on-one mentoring to students, ensuring they're learning in a safe and productive environment. We also offer tours of relevant training centers and invite professional speakers, like contractors, to provide valuable insights and inspiration.
Our Goal
At the end of the two-year Education Extension program, students are eligible to receive a 12-point industry-recognized credential. This credential satisfies the alternative pathways to graduation and gives them direct admission into an apprenticeship program. We're thrilled to be able to offer this program and help our students succeed in their careers.
The Curriculum
Through our Education Extension Carpentry Pre-Apprenticeship program, students gain hands-on experience in the building trades using the Career Connections curriculum. This includes instruction in career-based math, employability skills, and project-based learning with a focus on carpentry. We're proud to have established meaningful partnerships with industry professionals and organizations that are dedicated to providing educational support and outreach initiatives for our students.
Part 1: One Trade, Many Careers
Building a fulfilling life takes careful planning, hard work, and commitment. Like a carpenter who builds a house, you will need to start with a good set of plans. Think of this program as a blueprint. Just like a carpenter, in order to build from a blueprint, you will need the right tools. These tools include personal strengths, people skills, and unique talents. Part 1 of this program will explore the individual values, attitudes, strengths, and aspirations of students and discuss how these characteristics are important in a career.
Part 2: Math for the Trades
Students will learn about the concepts, principles, and formulas of math in the context of work students will do in their careers. Math will be demonstrated as a skill that is a useful tool for the trades. Focus areas include general math, fractions, decimals, and measurement.
Part 3: Project Book #1
Students will learn about safety on the job site, measuring, marking, and layout tools, basic use of hand tools, power tools, fasteners, and engage in project-based learning. Students will build a paper towel holder, birdhouse, bread box, bookcase, and toolbox.
Part 4: Project Book #2
Students will review safety protocols, tools, materials, and fasteners. Students will build a sawhorse, curved picnic table, folding picnic table, octagonal picnic table, skateboard ramp, Adirondack chair, portable workbench, and wishing well.
